Does anyone know how to make smoothies....?

...without going bankrupt? I bought a blender and a recipe book a few months ago thinking I could benefit my health and save money by making myself a daily fruit smoothie.

However, I've tried a couple of times to make the recipes in the book and I always seem to end up spending a LOT. Yesterday I went to Tesco, bought half of the ingredients for a recipe and realised that it had already come to £10 and I hadn't even bought the expensive ingredients AND the recipe only yields two glasses!!

It seems to me that the cheaper (and better tasting option) is to just buy smoothies already made. Even though they're incredibly expensive too! That was the reason I bought the blender in the first place! Has anyone actually found any good recipes that are cheaper than just buying them already bottled?

Well, I don't know what kind of smoothie you were making, but smoothies are REALLY cheap to make!

You will need fruit, yogurt, juice, ice cubes, milk, and possibly other ingredients depending on the recipe. You usually don't even need all of those things that I listed above.

Here are a few recipes that are cheap:

Breakfast Replacement Smoothie
Trying to get out the door in the morning and eat a good breakfast is a tough combination, so finding a good smoothie combination to help me is a good idea. Well, I like Grape Nuts cereal and I like to mix it in yogurt and eat it with lunch or for a snack. So why not blend it into a breakfast smoothie? So I did.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Grape Nuts cereal
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt (low-fat)
1 cup ice
1 banana
2 cups juice (orange, apple or whatever you like. I wouldn’t mind trying pineapple in this)
Blend and feel the energy!

Purple Cow Smoothie (Grape)
Sometimes it can be tough to find good grapes, especially during the winter months in Viriginia, so using grape concentrate in place of grapes is a good idea for a grape smoothie recipe.

Ingredients:

2 cups vanilla ice cream (that’s the cow part)
8 tbs. frozen grape juice concentrate (I like Welch’s and this is the purple part)
1 cup of milk (also the cow part)
1 cup of ice
Blend and enjoy.

Green Envy Avocado Smoothie
I absolutely love avocadoes and adding them to a smoothie is something I never thought of before. But I’m all about trying something new and how bad could it be? Well, it was excellent and the avocado adds a creamy texture you don’t find in smoothies usually. Try this avocado smoothie and surprise it on your friends. They’ll be amazed it was made from avocado.

Ingredients:

2 bananas
2 cups orange juice
1 cup of strawberries (preferably fresh, but frozen will do)
1 cup of orange or strawberry sherbet
1 cup ice
1 avocado, peeled and pitted

Danielle G Smoothie Recipe
The key is putting slightly more pineapples than strawberries, and because the fruit is frozen you dont need ice. Tastes great and very healthy!!

Ingredients:

2 1/2 to 3 cups of Welch’s strawberry Breeze Juice (or fill blender little less than half way full)
2 1/2 hand fulls of Dole’s frozen pineapples
1 1/2 to 2 hand fulls of Dole’s frozen whole strawberries
3 squirts of clover honey
Preparation:
Mix in blender on high for a few seconds. Serves 2 large cups.

Raspberry Chocolate Smoothie
This is a combination I haven’t tried before but raspberries and chocolate seem like a good combination so maybe it will be as good as I think it should be. Try this chocolate smoothie with a raspberry zing!

Ingredients:

1 cup frozen or fresh raspberries
1 ripe banana
2 tbs. instant chocolate pudding powder
1 cup cream soda (yep, cream soda)
1 cup milk
2 1/2 cups ice

Banana Breakfast Smoothie Recipe
A smoothie for breakfast is a great way to start the day. This breakfast smoothie has a great taste and is, of course, great for you.

Ingredients:

1-1/2 cups fat free milk
1 peeled and sliced medium banana, frozen – wrap sliced banana in plastic wrap or place in a freezer storage bag – freeze several hours or overnight.
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon almond extract, optional
Cinnamon for garnish, optional
Preparation:

In a blender container combine all ingredients, except cinnamon.
Blend until smooth, about 20 seconds.
Pour into glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, if desired.
Makes two servings.

Cherry Smoothie Recipe
This cherry smoothie makes a great breakfast smoothie, simple and quick to make and delicious to drink.

Ingredients:

1 very ripe banana, peeled
1 cup frozen unsweetened tart cherries
1 cup skim milk
Put banana, frozen cherries and milk in he container of an electric blender; puree until smooth. Serve immediately.

Serving size: one cup. Makes ten servings.

Eggnog Smoothie Recipe
Christmas Eggnog Smoothie

4 ice cubes
1 cup water
1 scoop Fat Flush Vanilla Whey Protein
1 envelope Stevia Plus
1 egg
1/4 t. each nutmeg,(Phase 3) ginger, cinnamon
Blend till smooth, pour and sprinkle a bit of nutmeg on top.

Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie
Is there a better flavor combination than chocolate and strawberries? I thought not, so why not creat a smoothie with these wonderful tastes?

INGREDIENTS

8 oz. chocolate milk
4 oz. strawberries
4 oz. bananas
A couple of ice cubes
Garnish with mint
Combine all ingredients and blend for one serving.

Tangerine Berry Smoothie Recipe
Tangerine Berry Smoothie

1⁄2 cup lowfat or nonfat plain yogurt
1⁄2 cup tangerine juice
1⁄2 cup frozen, unsweetened strawberries, unthawed
1 tablespoon sugar, or to taste
In a blender whirl all ingredients together 30 seconds to 1 minute until smooth and frothy. Makes 1 serving; about 1 - 1⁄2 cups.

I don't know if you will ike any of them, but...

FOOD INFORMATION

Many people assume that if a hamburger is brown in the middle, it is done. However, looking at the color and texture of food is not enough—you have to use a food thermometer to be sure! According to USDA research, 1 out of every 4 hamburgers turns brown before it reaches a safe internal temperature. The only safe way to know if meat, poultry, and egg dishes are "done" is to use a food thermometer. When a hamburger is cooked to 160 °F, it is both safe and delicious!

MADE, PRODUCED IN CHINA GET WARNING

Public confidence in the Made in China label has been rocked in recent years by a series of product safety scandals.

Most recently, tainted milk claimed the lives of four children in China and sickened tens of thousands, and triggered import bans of Chinese-made dairy products across the globe.

The United Nations released a report Wednesday urging China to set up a single regulatory agency to monitor the safety of food products from the farm to the table.

The report says China's oversight of food products is split between numerous agencies and their tasks complicated by numerous laws and regulations.

WHO food Safety Chief Jorgen Schlundt says the cumbersome system resulted in a slow response when the tainted milk scandal emerged in September.

Chinese milk producers added the industrial chemical melamine in their products to make them appear richer in protein. Melamine can cause kidney stones, and even life-threatening kidney failure in some cases.

On October 20, 2008, Confirmed cases of E.coli were linked to a Harvey’s Restaurant in North Bay Ontario.

More confirmed cases rose to 35-health officials claim. Health officials also said they know of a total of confirmed case of E coli 0157:H7 in the outbreak, involving eight health units in Ontario.

The out break was likely caused by human error rather then undercooked hamburger meat, a professor of food sciences, University of Manitoba, who has worked for Agriculture Canada.
