Does anyone know of any really good simple smoothie recipe books? I would really like to try some smoothies but as a mother of 3 I don't have a lot of time to mess about with long winded recipes or be hunting around for unusual ingredients. I'd be really grateful for any input.

Drink Your Way To Better Health With Delicious Blender Smoothies

Drinking blender smoothies is a highly enjoyable way to improve your health. Smoothies are not just really delicious, the fact is they are highly nutritious. It comes as no surprise why more and more people are becoming hooked to this healthy practice. Moreover, with today's fast-paced and hectic lifestyle, drinking smoothies is just perfect because preparing a glass of smoothies is not demanding at all. Read on to be more familiar with basic smoothie ingredients so you can choose the perfect ingredients according to your preference.

When you hear the word ‘smoothie', the first thing that comes to mind is ‘fruits'. Fruits are the principal and most popular ingredients in a smoothie. The top choice would be bananas, because of their natural sweetness and creamy texture. Add to that, bananas contain a high concentration of fiber, which cleanses the body of unwanted waste and promotes healthy function of the digestive system. A glass of a banana smoothie is ideal for breakfast or as a nutritious quick snack. Another favored ingredient by a lot of people, especially kids, is strawberry.  Strawberries are power-packed with essential phytonutrients and antioxidants that can protect the body from diseases. Avocados are also preferred by many, due to its pleasant taste and creamy texture.

Besides fruits, you need a liquid base for your smoothie to combine all the ingredients easily. The most commonly used liquid base would be cow's milk, but these days, more and more people prefer healthier substitutes such as milk made from rice, nuts or soy. These milk alternatives are becoming quite popular and are easily available in grocers and health food stores. You also might want to try using coconut milk as a liquid base. Coconut milk is creamy and nutritious, although you have to use it sparingly or it can overwhelm your drink's intended flavor. Water can also be used as your liquid base, if you prefer to have a low fat drink.

If you want to make your smoothie's consistency thicker and creamier and get more health benefits, I suggest that you include yogurt. Yogurt thickens the consistency of your drinks better than just milk alone. Add to this, adding yogurt will increase the nutrient level of your drinks, since yogurt provides an excellent source of calcium, as well as protein, phosphorus, Vitamin B2 and iodine. It also contains “friendly bacteria” that boosts the body's immune response. For those who are lactose intolerant, yogurt would be an excellent milk substitute.

Aside from combining various fruits, you can also include vegetables to your smoothies. It's a smart way to “powercharge” your smoothies to make sure that you get the healthy benefits from vegetables. If you find making your kids eat their greens quite a challenge, you can sneak veggies such as broccoli, spinach or asparagus into their smoothies.

There is no end to the possibilities and combinations when making delicious blender smoothies.
