Is natural sugar included in the nutrition label?

Because I bought some natural smoothie stuff and it is really delicious, but I just realized there is an outrageous amount of 27g of sugar in each glass!! I looked at the ingredients, but there is no high fructos corn syrup or even sugar, it is just like strawberry purree, natural flavors, and I would have been able to pronounce the ingredients when I was 7, all simple words and no weird chemicals.

So does this mean it is all natural sugar? Should I still be concerened with all this sugar?

Natural sugars found in fruit are part of the total carbohydrate count and listed as a sub-category - sugar. Look on the ingredient label again for anything ending in OSE. That would be SUGAR! It's hard to believe there isn't any added sugar in any kind of smoothie.

Here's a list of sugars...

Brown sugar
Cane syrup
Corn sweetener
Corn syrup
Corn syrup solids
Dextrose
Fructose
Fruit juice concentrate
Galactose
Glucose
High-fructose corn syrup
Honey
Invert sugar
Lactose
Malt
Maltose
Malt syrup
Maple syrup
Molasses
Raw sugar
Rice syrup
Sucrose

The amount of sugars you choose to consume is of course up to you. If you're not overweight and don't have a family history of diabetes you don't have to cut out all sugar. Just choose wisely and don't go overboard.

I happen to avoid ALL sugar (except in low sugar fruits/vegetables) because I'm a low-carber.

First, let's start with smoothie basics. Smoothies are basically a blend of fruits, vegetables and a liquid base such as milk, juice or yogurt. You can actually incorporate just about anything you prefer or need. The most commonly used fruits in making smoothies are bananas, berries, apples and pineapples. You can incorporate any kind of vegetable into your homemade smoothie. A lot of people favor spinach, carrots, cucumber and broccoli in their smoothies. Try blending one medium sized banana, a pack of frozen berries, one cup of low fat milk or soy milk, and one cup of vanilla yogurt for a fast and healthy snack. Then you can start adding other ingredients such as vegetables, nuts or natural supplements depending on your taste or objectives.

Homemade smoothies are definitely better than prepackaged ones because freshly made drinks retain the highest nutrient level. Prepackaged smoothie drinks have to undergo several processes to prolong shelf life. While they are still healthy, they are not as healthy as the drinks you make at home. One important tip when making smoothies: you should consume them within 15 minutes so that you will get the maximum nutritional benefits. The reason being, nutrients lose their benefits when exposed to air and light.

Fresh fruit and veggie smoothies also have a high concentration of fibers and enzymes that promote better digestion and absorption of nutrients in the body.
